National Poetry Writing Dropout Month

There's a reason why I prefer to write a poem a day during months that are not April. Between this week and next, I will be spending way too much time away in finery and not at home with my family. Readings, graduate reading, readings, other stuff. To think I scoffed at the notion of the cruellest (sic) month. I'm in the belly of that beast and treading.

Right now I would love to go home and bake cupcakes and then frost them elaborately. Instead, I need to sit at my desk and focus. I thought this would all go away when April shook its lamb tail for the last time, but instead it seems that the lion has two heads and survives on chocolate covered espresso beans.

I've been doing a lot of thinking. Poeming is at a halt, for the sake of sanity. When you arrive home from a 13.5 hour day of work, at 9:30 pm, the last thing you want to do is sit in front of a computer and upbraid yourself for having nothing profound to say.

In happier news, I will be reading with the lovely Jennifer Chang on Monday, 4/30, 7:30 pm, Main Classroom 134, Cleveland State University. I'm revising poems for the reading right now. Instead of doing other things.

This is a photo of a tiny bunny statue just chillin' in somebody's landscaping. That is where I would like to be in a couple of weeks.

Dude, you have nothing to be ashamed of (says the guy who washed out of his NaPoWriMo group 6 poems in).

I played the curmudgeon this year, not even starting along my way down the poetry month. And just for the record, April IS indeed the cruelest month---four poems once accepted for a journal were unceremoniously rejected. They were the first four poems accepted for publication from my latest manuscript effort and the only positive submission news I have had for six months.

I am not a pleasant person to be around these days.
