Stay still.

I like the idea of luxury, in theory, but I'm not so good at the "take a break" part of it. Right now I'm forcing myself to sit down and waste time for ten minutes before I start vacuuming the floors and cleaning the catpans. Oh, the glamorous life of a poet and writing program director.

This week my department voted in favor of my (early) tenure. That hit me more than a lot of milestones in recent memory, mostly because I'm happy to be doing something well. Administration is frustrating and often thankless. My tenure application is a big box filled with journals and binders. I'm ready to step up now, please.

Happy to say that I've written two new poems so far this semester, ones that I can keep. No time so far to look at the manuscript, between some major changes in my home life and adjusting to new duties at work. I have goals though. We'll see.

Wow! Congrats on early tenure.

Some day, I'd love to hear more about the life of a writing program administrator--what it's really like, how it's different from what you thought it would be like, its joys and frustrations.

What I really want to know is whether or not the life of a writing program administrator is different from an English dep't chair or the chair that's in charge of a Liberal Arts kind of department

So, if you're ever casting about for a blog topic, that one would get my vote.

Congrats! (I was an administrator of a small developmental studies program for two years -- I discovered that I should never be an administrator of anything!)

Looking forward to your chapbook!

Awesome, congrats! As someone who isn't involved in school anymore (at the moment at least), I momentarily forgot what tenure was, and when I saw "early tenure" I was like "oh no!" And then I realized EARLY tenure means putting you on tenure quickly, not ending it soon, which I'm not even sure really makes sense. hahaha.

Just a little like "your test came back negative." Where you have to think a moment to figure out if that's good or bad. :P

That's such wonderful news, Mary! I'm just started that long road toward tenure, but I can already see how exhausting the journey can be. Mazel-tov!
