This post about favorite record albums got me wondering why I don't have any favorites. It's not that I don't like anything. I just don't rank things, I guess.
Like, if someone asked me, "Who rocks harder, Kip Winger or Ted Nugent?" I would totally have an answer, but I could not tell you my top ten--or five--Ted Nugent songs. Well, obviously "Cat Scratch Fever" would be up there, but is it really the best?
I also don't have a favorite poet. Sometimes I have a favorite poem in a book, but if somebody was all, "Name your top five favorite poets, damn it!" I would probably have to make something up on the spot, and it would probably change depending on my mood.
Okay, I do know that Yeats would be in there somewhere. And my favorite poem is probably "The Wings" by Denise Levertov. But I don't have lists.
Blogosphere friends, am I normal? Do you keep note of your favorites? Should I set aside an office hour to write down my favorite things? Am I an incomplete human being until then?

I don't have favorites either. There is just too much variety in life to narrow it down. I have NEVER had a favorite color (even as a young child)and I couldn't pick a favorite artist or author if I had too. Sure there a few at the top of the list but none I would deem as my all time favorite. So you are not alone.
I go through phases. I will listen to Bob Dylan non-stop, or Pink Floyd, then nothing but Punk Rock and No Wave. It really depends on what's going on. Lately, it's been Uncle Tupelo, Gram Parsons, and Son Volt.
If you want a life changing experience, go here and listen/watch to Obadiah Parker's cover of "Hey Ya" by Outkast:

page down to the Youtube window and hit play.
If that doesn't work, here is an audio link:

Having plugged Obadiah Parker (group, not a person), My reading is often the same thing. I will read for specific things. Right now, I am reading Thomas McGrath, Marvin Bell, and Stanley Kunitz. A while ago, I couldn't put down Brian Turner's Here Bullet.
There was a time when I couldn't be pulled away from Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Unfortunately, I am probably the least read poet in the world. I really do not read enough of anything.
Ah, but you can readily identify your favorite short story, no?
Seriously, though, as the guilty party for the favorite records post, I'm someone who can readily identify my favorite records, maybe favorite songs, but certainly not favorite movies. It would take me some time to name my favorite books (no jokes about how little I actually read, please). I think it's different for everyone. If I asked you to name your five favorite woodland creatures, you'd likely come up with a list pretty quickly, as you're more interested in nature than records.
It's one of your better traits, quite honestly.
