Edge of Seventeen

Holy crap! I finally counted and I have seventeen poems--mostly new--that aren't under consideration anywhere right now. It's going to be one heck of a Big Fall Submission.

How's your BFS going?

I used to be really efficient and get it out the first or second week of Fall semester. Then I remember in 2001 I was really preoccupied and didn't get it out until October. From then on I seemed to aim for October. This year I'd like to get it out sooner.

A couple of old posts about the BFS. I got it out in September of 2005, apparently. Well I'll be darned.

In somewhat related literary publishing news...

Barn Owl Review's poetry-reading period is now closed until we open for the next issue. Many thanks to all who submitted! Now comes the fun and excruciating task of filling the last few pages we have left for poetry (fiction subs still welcome). Thank goodness Sara Tracey has joined our editorial staff, or else we might never finish reading everything. We're thrilled to have Sara as our newest Owl.

In totally unrelated news...

The First Fall Cold (FFC) of AY07-08 is upon us. Usually we get it later than week two, but maybe this is just a special year. Ray's temp was 103.8 before Motrin, but later he was back to chasing the cats and dancing in the living room. Here's Schubert after a particularly vigorous patting session.

I just decided on my BFS packets, tightened up the poems, and drafted my new bio (including my new position as associate edior of BOR!). There must be something in the air...

I'll be starting my "Fall Offensive" this next week. I have been having this odd nesting instinct of just wanting to get everything organized and in its place before I begin.

I could call it procrastination or I could call it making sure I have nothing to take me away from my writing once my daughter's school begins this week.

Wishing you much success this year with your writing!

best,
Kel

Good luck, Kelli!

My Fall submissions will not be good for me. I maybe have two or three poems ready to submit. I really need to get in the swing of writing again. It has been almost a year since I sent anything out.

BFS is going to be big thanks to Sandra's poem-a-day August marathon. I need to strategize, though. No idea where to send stuff and they're all very different as far as tone and style.
