In addition to a cheapie contemporary poetry anthology, I am assigning books by Jeannine Hall Gailey, Paul Guest, Simone Muench, and Peter Pereira.
To say that I am looking forward to Spring 07 would be a major understatement. We get to hang out with these books all semester? Hooray!
I am in the process of designing a Fall 07 MFA Craft & Theory of Poetry course about the first book market, so I'll have to go through this decision process all over again then. We'll definitely be using Ordering the Storm from the Cleveland State University Poetry Center, since it helped me make a ton of breakthroughs. But other first books? Back to the drawing board I go.

With my few free hours today (I know, a total rarity to have free hours) I read Paul Guest's book.

If there's room for one more book, might I suggest Poetry for Cats: The Definitive Anthology of Distinguished Feline Verse by Henry Beard?
Or would such a book be better served as the centerpiece of a semester-long study of cat antics portrayed poetically? Advanced hours? Grad level?
